Last Meeting Unfinished Business
Last meeting we discussed broadening the team's research into human robot interaction. There was conversation about splitting the HCI team into an HRI and QA team, but management decided to reassign our current team to start the new robotics project. Following up on the additional questions from last meeting:
Will there be a party to celebrate the launch of PLX?
- Yes! It will be held in CNTR 103 on June 13th, more info to come. Fill out the form at the end of the meeting notes to RSVP and recomend food options or provide dietary restrictions.
- Additionally we need someone to bring plates/drinks/napkins. Email Kelly at kdempster@ucsd.edu if you buy party supplies to get company reinversement.
If our team was to transfer to HRI, what would we be working on?
- Though we are not moving or merging with the HRI team, we will be working on the project in collaboration with them, and so it is important to know the things that team are concerned about in our robot design.
- Some important terms to familarize yourself with include anthropomorphism, uncanny valley, and zoomorphism.
Additionally, since we exeeded our goals for PLX's launch, so everyone gets an extra day of PTO! Lets strive to give our best on this new project as well.
New Business
The project we will be working on is developing a cute desktop robot that helps users stay productive and build healthy habits. The only contraints given thus far are that its boxy in design, usb charged, and has cloud capabilities to connect it to an app or website, which still needs to be built. They also want it to be interactable.
Brainstorming Session
- Color pallete following plants. Greens, blues, browns
- Sprout like design
- Interactive features such as touch sensor on head
- Buttons to log activities with the robot
- Facial expressions for various states
- Timer only when focusing
- Movement or static cube?
- Animal properties to make it cute like cat ears, dog tail
- Sound to let user know when timer is done
- Break mode vs working mode faces
- Cloud stores activities logged, and not being consistant makes the robot appear sad

Misc and Q&A
What is the budget for this project?
Exact figures are unknown, but for material costs its ~$5,000.
Will we be working on the web app too?
This is also undecided. Will speak with management and get back to you next meeting.
